Why the weeks differ

Every visible change waits for the skin to renew itself. One cycle of the epidermis takes roughly 28 days in young adults and 40 to 60 days after 50, which is the first reason two people report the same active at different speeds. Texture sits in the top layers, so it answers within 1 to 2 cycles: an AHA can feel smoother within 7 days and looks more even at 4 to 6 weeks. Pigment sits deeper and leaves with each cycle, collagen is slower still, so 3 to 6 cycles, or 12 to 24 weeks, pass before a photograph shows the difference. What the studies measured

The weeks in the chart come from the endpoints of published trials, not from a label. Tretinoin studies read their results at 12 and 24 weeks, with fine lines and pigmentation still improving between those two dates; the retinoid guide compares the strengths and the conversion steps. Vitamin C serums are usually assessed at 12 weeks, and the form and the concentration decide how much of that is real. Niacinamide is read at 8 to 12 weeks for pores and oil, although redness often settles within 2 to 4 weeks at 2 to 5 percent, and tranexamic acid is read at 8 to 12 weeks in melasma. A humectant plumps within hours and holds nothing once you stop. Sunscreen is the exception in the other direction: it works from the first application, and its result is the spots you never get.

What this tool is not

It does not know your skin, your dose, your formula or the rest of your routine, and it cannot tell you whether an active suits you. The timings are middle values from groups of volunteers, so half of a study group arrived sooner and half later. Judge your own result with photographs every 4 weeks in the same light, at the same time of day, without makeup: the most common reason an active "did nothing" is that it was dropped at week 3, before its first endpoint. Retinoids are not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and if you take an oral retinoid such as isotretinoin the pace of everything changes, so ask the doctor who prescribed it. Burning, swelling, pain, or redness that lasts longer than 2 weeks is a reason to stop and ask a dermatologist, not a reason to wait longer.

Most actives change how skin cells behave, and that change only becomes visible once those cells have travelled to the surface. One renewal cycle takes about 28 days in young adults and 40 to 60 days after 50, so the first 2 to 4 weeks are spent on chemistry you cannot see.

Can I speed a retinoid up by using it every night?

Not beyond the pace at which the tissue renews. Going too fast mostly buys irritation, and irritated skin flakes, flushes and can darken where it was inflamed, which reads as a worse result at week 8. Build the frequency up over 8 to 12 weeks instead.

What counts as proof that it is working?

A photograph every 4 weeks, same light, same time of day, no makeup. Skin moves in steps of roughly 10 percent at a time, and memory cannot measure that.

Each active keeps its own clock, which is why the chart draws one row per active. Add them one at a time, 2 to 4 weeks apart, so a result or a reaction can be traced back to one product.

What does the tool store?

Your selection and the start date stay in your browser under a single local storage key, so the chart is still there when you come back. Nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing site data removes it.

When is a timeline the wrong answer?

When skin is inflamed, painful or getting worse, or when melasma keeps returning despite sunscreen every morning. Those belong with a dermatologist, and so does any plan while you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking an oral retinoid.
